Dear Collector,
Over the past two years, the series of four auctions featuring the Ron Brigham collection of Province of Canada has captivated collectors and dealers alike, presenting some of the greatest items Canadian philately has to offer!
These highly anticipated sales generated great exposure and record prices were achieved, with never-before-seen prices for Canadian rarities. Total realization for the four auctions reached an astonishing $10,388,308 inclusive of buyer’s premium. All 621 lots were sold, for an average of over $16,000 per lot. Eighteen lots were hammered for six figures, their combined total surpassing 5 million dollars!
Historically speaking, this is the highest result attained for any Canada or British North America collection. We are very proud of having raised the bar to new heights, no doubt placing Canada & B.N.A. back into the spotlight on the world stage for years to come.
Following the Brigham sale, we offered the first portion of the Denninger collection. Sale 1 was dedicated to the colonial stamps and covers of British North America. Demand for British Columbia and Maritimes Provinces appears to have caught up with that for Newfoundland, which is nice to see. Among many strong results one was particularly noteworthy – the famous Prince Edward Island 2p rose rouletted more than doubled its pre-sale estimate and fetched $52,500 ($62,212 with buyer’s premium), the highest ever paid for any PEI item.
We look forward to Denninger Sale 2 on Friday, November 15. It will offer the first part of the Canada collection and features a fantastic array of rarities from Pence to modern era. The Elizabethan period (including what will come in Sale 4) is without question the finest that has ever been assembled.
On Saturday, November 16, the very impressive Hobart Collection will showcase the 1897 Diamond Jubilee series. We are truly honoured to present one of the greatest collections of Canada’s first commemorative series ever sold at auction. The last time this popular series was showcased in a dedicated catalogue was over 40 years ago, formed by the famous collector Gerald Wellburn. The Hobart collection features a mesmerizing number of very rare to unique essays, progressive & trial colour die proofs, key mint, used multiples and specimen overprints.
Many thanks to our consignors for their trust and to all our clients for their unwavering support and passion.
